Match Report: Staples vs. Fairfield Warde
The Staples boys soccer team will not finish the 2026 season unscored upon.
But they are still undefeated.
Fairfield Warde ended the Wreckers’ 5 1/2-game shutout streak with a penalty kick today, early in the second half at Wakeman Field.
But it was just about the only down note on the chilly, windy pre-nor’easter afternoon.
Staples broke open a 2-0 match with 5 second-half goals against the well-coached and very competitive Mustangs. The hosts’ 7-1 victory ups their record to 6-0-0.
Next week brings 3 contests in 5 days: Monday (non-league at Enfield, 3:45 p.m.); Wednesday versus Norwalk at West Rocks Middle School (6:15 p.m.), and Friday home against St. Joseph (4 p.m.).
Monday marked the first start for Ciaran Kennedy. The junior showed strongly on Wednesday in Ridgefield, and today showed consistency and poise at right back.
It took the Wreckers a few minutes to adjust to the strong wind, at their backs. Warde, meanwhile, came out confidently, with the trademark quick, short-passing style of coach Russell Oost-Lievense.
It took 18 minutes — uncharacteristically long — for Staples to snag their first goal. Lucas Alarcon won a poke tackle, and Noah Rossoni finished low.
Ten minutes later, Alarcon slotted a cross through the box, for another opportunistic strike. This one was by Adrian Rodriguez.
Five minutes after intermission, Rodriguez blazed down the right side. His cross found Gus Reyna, for the sophomore’s first-ever varsity score.
The scoring continued with Rodriguez (from Rossoni), Kai Massicott and Jaden Waldman to Greyson Downes, and Alex Saleeb to Henry Green — his first varsity goal too.
The final tally — a rebound of a shot by Saleeb — came from Ethan Katzner. He has become one of the Wreckers’ most consistent scorers off the bench.
QUICK KICKS: It took Fairfield Warde over an hour to travel the few miles to Westport. I-95 was shut down following a fatal accident on I-95, and back roads were jammed too. The match started 15 minutes late …
The junior varsity shut out Fairfield Warde 6-0. Goals came from mason Holl (2), Max McDermott, Lachlan Langone, Kailan Spadea and Lucas Klein.
The freshmen beat Danbury 2-1. Goals came from Reuben Lavinsky and Santi Rozo.
