Wreckers Announce 2015 Schedule

3 Saturday matches. 4 night games. Home contests against top rivals Greenwich, Fairfield Ludlowe, Norwalk, Darien and Wilton. The return of Stamford after a 5-year absence. And no more Bassick or Harding.

Those are some items of note on the Staples boys soccer team’s 2015 FCIAC schedule.

With 2 of the 3 Bridgeport schools moving out of the league — only Central remains — the FCIAC will finally have a “balanced” slate. Previously, with 19 league teams but a state-mandated 16-game schedule, each school did not play 2 others. (That’s why no player currently at Staples has ever played Stamford.) This fall, everyone plays everyone else.

Because the Bridgeport schools have left, this year’s schedule is completely new. Some opponents will come to Staples for the 2nd year in a row; the Wreckers will travel to others for the 2nd consecutive yeear.

Opening day is Saturday, September 12 (3 p.m.) at Trumbull. “They’ve had our number the past few years,” head coach Dan Woog says. “They’ll be very strong this fall. We have to be ready, and come out of the starting gate hard.”

Woog notes that there is a very tough 3-game stretch in October, with Fairfield Ludlowe, Norwalk and Darien in a 6-day stretch. All 3 matches are home.

Night matches are set for Ridgefield, Bridgeport Central, Brien McMahon and Fairfield Warde. The blue-and-whites played memorable night contests at all both Ridgefield (come-from-behind 4-3 win) and Warde (4-0 victory) in 2014.

The regular season follows a very tough pre-season. Opponents include Fairfield Prep, private school powerhouses South Kent and Choate, and New York City’s always-strong Martin Luther King High.
