Steven Sobel Named Governor’s Scholar

Steven Sobel has been selected as a Governor’s Scholar. The junior is 1 of just 30 students in Connecticut chosen for the honor. Over 150 were nominated — but each school is allowed only 1 candidate.

Governor’s Scholars are invited to a luncheon with Governor Dannel Malloy on May 16. Staples principal John Dodig will also attend.

Governor’s Scholars must rank in the top 5 percent of the junior class, and write an essay on an assigned topic.

This year, students were asked to choose 3 challenges the United States must face. Steven wrote about educational disparity and inequality; preservation of natural resources, and the electrical grid.

In addition to soccer, Steven runs indoor and outdoor track, plays cello, and is a member of the Service League of Boys (SLOBS) and the Wreckers in Tune music organization.
