Staples vs. Harding

Loeffler Field was still damp from a week of rains, so the going was slow as Staples hosted the undermanned (only 12 players) Harding squad.

The Wreckers were missing 4 starters, but the 4 seniors, 5 juniors and 2 sophomores who started took command from the start.

Goal #1, at 12:09, came on a Steve Smith slot, off crisp passes from Max Hoberman and Lars Aanestad.

Aanestad assisted on the 2nd score, 51 seconds later — this one by Hoberman.

Less than 5 minutes after that, sophomore Lorenz Esposito headed in Smith’s free kick for a 3-0 edge.

The 2nd half opened with soph defender Harry Birch heading home Taylor McNair’s corner kick.

Will Meinke and AJ Green fed 10th grader Dylan Hoy for a 47th-minute tally, ticking in off the post.

Hoy got his 2nd straight midway through the half.  Smith assisted.

Alex Tonsberg, Ryan Armour, and Felipe Troncoso came close too, as the clock wound down.  Birch, Armour, McNair, Will Meinke and Ben Root preserved the shutout.  Final score:  Staples 6, Harding 0.  Season record:  6-2-0.

QUICK KICKS: Sean Gallagher played the final 2 minutes in goal.  Throughout his 4-year varsity career, the tri-captain has now played all 11 positions for Staples….

Neither Gallagher, James Hickok nor Connor Walsh was credited with a save in goal.
