Sirlin, Brill, Marmelo Feted At Scholar-Athlete Dinner

Grant Sirlin — Staples boys soccer scholar-athlete for 2016 — was honored Sunday night at the Westport Inn.

Each varsity sport picks one awardee. In addition to receiving a plaque and memory book, the scholar-athletes have to answer a question from their coach about their sports, interests, hobbies or passions.

Sirlin’s was about his writing for Inklings. He said the story he’s most proud of is one called “Looking Past the Grades” (about competitiveness at Staples). His most commented-on story ever was about favorite pizza places. (Number One: Colony.)

Two other graduating seniors shared the stage with Sirlin.

Daniel Brill received the Coleman Brothers Foundation $15,000 scholarship. The award — named for former Staples soccer player Scott Coleman and his brother Keith, a Wrecker wrestler — was presented by Todd Coleman, captain of Staples’ 1983 soccer team. Funds come from the Westport Soccer Association’s WIN tournament.

Andres Marmelo was presented with the $3,000 Albie Loeffler Scholarship. That award — named for the founder of the Staples soccer program — goes annually to a player who demonstrates the qualities that Loeffler embodied:  academic excellence and integrity; athletic skill and contributions, and strong family values.
