Scrimmage Report: Staples vs. Fairfield Prep

For the past several years, the Wreckers have opened their pre-season scrimmage schedule against Fairfield Prep. The Jesuits are always well coached, strong, and provide a stiff 1st test.

Yet the match has never been played at Prep. In fact, in the 58-year history of Staples soccer, the Wreckers have never met Prep away.

Today, they did just that.

Rafferty Field features beautiful turf, and a very wide field. That made defending extra hard — but that’s what pre-season matches are for. The Wreckers’ backs — starters Kenji Goto, Josh Berman, Kenny Brill and Matteo Broccolo, along with Chris Martenson, Griff O’Neill, Andres Marmelo and Teddy Lawrence — weathered early pressure, then kept the hosts at bay for good stretches during the 3 30-minute periods. Keepers Ziggy Hallgarten and Brenden Price kept a clean sheet throughout too.

The lone goal came near the end of the 1st period. Broccolo’s ball over the top was flicked on by Daniel Brill. Sam Kantor raced on, to finish.

Staples’ next match is 4 p.m. Wednesday, at home against one of the top prep schools in New England: South Kent.
