Joe Greenwald, Diego Alanis Win Octathlon Basketball Challenge

Joe Greenwald and Diego Alanis took 1st place in this month’s Octathlon of Champions event — a 2-v-2 basketball challenge. The junior and sophomore earned 10 points each with the victory.

Noah Bender and Jack Scott finished 2nd, for 5 points each.

Joe — a 2012 co-captain — picked up another 10 points for being unanimous choice as MVP. In a special 3-v-3 game afterward, worth 3 points, the team of Jack Scott, Jeff Krieger and Ryan Petersen won.

At the halfway point of the Octathlon, Jack Scott maintains his overall lead, with 41 points. Joe Greenwald vaults into 2nd place (28), just ahead of Ryan Petersen (26).

Behind them are Noah Bender (21), James Hickok (19), Diego Alanis (17) and Connor Weiler (12).

Trailing behind are Jeff Krieger (5), Jon Denowitz (3), Walker Marsh (2), and Harry Hlawitschka, Sam Koenig, Matt Liebergall, Tucker Rizzi, Greg Shikowitz and Andrew Travers (1 each).

Jack Scott drives intently toward the basket, against Jeff Krieger (left) and Ryan Petersen. Jack’s teammate Noah Bender is obscured by the ball.

The Octathlon is an 8-month, 8-event competition for all varsity returnees and last fall’s 11th grade JV players. Each returning varsity player designs and organizes one event.

The May event is paintball, organized by James Hickok.
