Alex Deegan ’91 is giving something back to the game that’s been so good to him.

The goaltender, who led Davidson College to an NCAA Division I Final Four berth before playing professionally with DC United and the Richmond Kickers,  is volunteering with Street Soccer USA. That nationally recognized program supports homeless people — including teenagers — through soccer.

Alex — who works in Washington, DC for Allied Capital, a business development firm — is involved with Street Soccer Cup.  Set for July 31-August 2 in the nation’s capital, the event will draw teams from 16 cities across the country.  The squads, comprised of homeless players, will vie for the Street Soccer Cup.

The tournament will also serve as a tryout for the U.S. national team. That side will compete in Milan against dozens of nations for the Homeless World Cup.

Last Sunday, the New York Times highlighted this summer’s DC event.  A front-page story described the important health and social benefits soccer provides to homeless people. In 2008 Street Soccer USA impacted nearly 1,000 individuals.

All 8 members of the US national team participating in last year’s Homeless World Cup in Melbourne are now either employed or in school, and off the street. Since 2005, 28 of 32 national team players have found homes.

Congratulations, Alex, on this important work!
