Varsity, JV, Freshman Rosters Announced

65 soccer players will wear the Staples “S” this season.

After nearly 2 weeks of evaluation, the varsity’s 25-man roster is set. Co-captains Diego Alanis and Jack Scott will lead 12 returnees and 13 newcomers onto the field Tuesday (4 p.m., home vs. Danbury).

The varsity squad includes 13 seniors, 5 juniors and 7 sophomores.

Coach Seth Sholes’ 18-person junior varsity is young: 5 juniors, 12 sophomores, and freshman goalkeeper Ziggy Hallgarten. He is the 1st 9th grader to play JV soccer when there is also a freshman team.

Coach Chris O’Dell has selected 22 freshmen for his side. The roster includes 4 siblings of current or former players: Kenny Brill (Daniel); Daniel Jersey (Charlie); Daniel Reid (Michael) and Jerrett Rende (Frankie and Justin). Freshman Shane Dasbach is the son of varsity assistant coach Kurt Dasbach.

It is an international mix. Among the 65 players, a number were born overseas, or have at least one foreign-born parent. Countries represented on the Staples roster include Brazil, Cuba, Denmark, Egypt, England, Greece, Iraq, Japan, Mexico, Norway and Portugal.

Many others, though, were born here, and began their soccer careers with the Westport Soccer Association.

The varsity team’s goal is to add “2013” to both sides of the kickboard.
