Tryouts Begin Thursday, August 27

Mark the date: Thursday, August 27.

That’s the 1st day of tryouts for all 2015 Staples soccer candidates, in all 4 grades.

It’s also the 1st day of school.

This marks the 1st time in at over 45 years — perhaps ever — that tryouts do not begin on a Saturday. The starting date is mandated by the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC). This year they moved the start date 2 days earlier. This year also, Westport schools start a full week and a half before Labor Day — another first. That accounts for the new timing of tryouts.

Tryouts will begin at 4 p.m. for 10th, 11th and 12th graders at Loeffler Field; 9th graders meet coach Chris O’Dell right after school at a site at Staples to be determined, then head up to Wakeman). Tryouts continue on Friday, August 28. There are double sessions (8-10 a.m., 3-5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, August 29 and 30). The 1st varsity scrimmage is Monday, August 31 vs. Fairfield Prep.

“It will be different,” said head coach Dan Woog. “But the new format offers us a chance to do things a little differently. Soccer players — and coaches — are flexible and adaptable. We will hit the ground running, as we always do, and take it from there.”

Any 10th, 11th or 12th grader wishing to try out who did not attend the pre-season meeting should email dwoog@optonline.net, for important forms.

A very fit group gathered for the 1st day of tryouts last August.
