State Tournament Begins Tuesday; Wreckers At South Windsor, 2 pm

Staples’ quest for a 13th state championship begins Tuesday.

The Wreckers — ranked 21st in the LL (extra large schools) division with a 7-3-6  regular season record — travel to South Windsor (#12, 11-5-0). Game time is 2 p.m.

Staples and South Windsor have played twice before in the state tournament. In 2001 the Wreckers lost 1-0. In 2005 they won, also 1-0.

The upstaters have had many close matches this year. They fell 2-1 to Hall, ranked 6th in LL; 1-0 to E.O. Smith (14-1-1), seeded 1st in the L tournament, and 1-0 to defending state M champion Tolland.

“We always say we’ll play anyone, any time, anywhere,” says Staples head coach Dan Woog. “We’ll try to figure out South Windsor, and be ready for them. We welcome the opportunity to play a new opponent. And of course in the state tournament, we approach it one match at a time.”

Eleven FCIAC schools are in the LL tournament.

A playdown on Saturday to get into the round of 32 pits #30 Ridgefield against #35 Norwalk. # Trumbull (12-0-4 regular season) — which tied Greenwich 1-1 for the FCIAC championship last night — plays the winner of that playdown round. In another all-FCIAC matchup, #11 Danbury (10-2-4) meets #22 Fairfield Ludlowe (9-6-1).

Other FCIAC LL contests have #2 Greenwich hosting the winner of Saturday’s Westhill vs. Career/Hillhouse playdown;  #13 Darien hosting #20 Conard-West Hartford; #14 Fairfield Warde home against #19 East Hartford, and #24 Stamford at #9 (and defending state champ) Glastonbury
