We also provided food for poor communities and schools, and brought gifts and clothing for the orphanages.  The organization we were with was Kids Alive International.

"Some of the homes only had 1 handmade soccer ball, or 1 or 2 very old balls.  The balls we gave brought so much joy and excitement to the kids. Their faces said it all. Ruden also gave the blue-and-whites nice props in his December 12, 2008 column headlined "Tough Choices for Fall Awards." He wrote:

"Most Inspirational team: Staples boys soccer. The Wreckers knew they were going to be improved coming off a 7-7-2 season, but with just three senior starters even the most heartened optimist could not have expected that a year in which the program celebrated its 50th anniversary would end with a league title, a trip to the state semifinals and team records for wins (21) and shutouts (18). In the process the players, with their high skill level and vibrant personalities, galvanized the school community, helping to attract several crowds that exceeded 1,000 people and sending the Staples campus into a depression when the season finally ended."

STUART MCCARTHY '79 P'10 SENDS THANKS: In the wake of the recent 50th Staples soccer celebration, the state championship winner wrote:

"What a tremendous weekend to be part of the Staples High School soccer program. Having worn almost every hat possible in  relation to this program, I send this message on behalf of the entire Staples soccer community.

"As a  boy I began watching my idols playing in the coveted Staples navy and white. I had the great fortune to be a member of the 1978 state champion team (I would tell you we were the best team ever [which is true] if I didn’t want to avoid thousands of emails telling me differently). I coached the Staples boys JV team and am presently the proud parent of an equally proud current player. Over the weekend it occurred to me that I, along with a few of my teammates and only a handful of others, had played for Mr. Loeffler, Jeff Lea and Dan Woog.

"High school years focused on family, academics and soccer are one of the great experiences of life. To be a player at Staples can be a defining experience of a man’s life. I am sure dozens of former players at the festivities never attended a class reunion since leaving Staples, and likely never will. But they would not have missed last weekend. Others plan family events around the chance to attend the Thanksgiving game or the Loeffler tournament each December. We share a bond that will never be broken. When 2 of my teammates in the past few years suffered the tragic losses of their spouses, teammates from Staples soccer came from around the country to share their grief and provide strength. And I know it is not just my team and my friends. EVERY team at Staples can share stories of friendships that are as strong or stronger than any they have made in their lives.

"Thank you as a former player for making it so easy for us to continue to keep these relationships alive and building new ones each year. And thank you as a parent for maintaining something so special that my son is able to share this experience. And thank you for this past weekend and giving all of us the opportunity to celebrate 50 years of Staples soccer."

Because of his illness he missed me in the Queens Half-Marathon and the Miami Marathon. My father passed away in January. I will be running this year’s New York Marathon as a testament to him. In his honor I have committed to raise at least $5,000 for Team Continuum, a charity that cares for the immediate needs of cancer patients, in their fight for survival and to improve their quality of life. Please sponsor me in honoring my father, or someone you know who is battling cancer, or a loved one you have lost. All donations are tax deductible. OBITUARIES: 3 FRIENDS OF STAPLES SOCCER: Scott "Hoover" Wilder, 53, died of complications following surgery. The brother of Sandy Wilder '70, he played soccer at Bedford Junior High School, and basketball and golf at Staples. Though paralyzed following an automobile accident in his 1st year at Babson College, he retained a tremendous zest for life -- including all sports -- and maintained staunch friendships with many Wrecker soccer players. Click here for a website that honors Hoover's life. Bill Hutchinson, 91, grandfather of Steve Uydess '92, was a constant presence on the hill during Steve's time at Staples, and long afterward. Bill was an All-America football player at Dartmouth College, and played 2 years with the New York Giants. Dave Fass, 65, a dentist, was a former board member of the Westport Soccer Association.

'06 TEAM WINS NATIONAL ACADEMIC AWARD: The state finalist 2006 Staples soccer team has added another honor: It is one of only 4 Connecticut boys' squads to earn National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas honors for academics. For recognition, the average GPA of all varsity players must be at least 3.25. This is the 3rd time in 4 years the Wreckers have won the award, and the 6th since it was instituted in 1999. "I've always known the Staples boys soccer program attracts some of the brightest students at Staples," said head coach Dan Woog. "I'm glad the NSCAA recognizes it too."

He is now eligible for the National High School Assistant Coach of the Year award, to be announced Friday, January 18 at the NSCAA convention in Baltimore. Wrecker head coach Dan Woog, who nominated Dasbach for the award, said: "Every player who knows Kurt knows his value to our program. His insights, innovations and 'soccer brain' are rivaled only by his passion for the game, and care and concern for every single Staples soccer player. I am glad the NSCAA has recognized what every person in our progam knows: Kurt is the best of the best."

SENIORS/RECENT ALUMNI WIN INDOOR TOURNAMENT; EVENT RAISES $1,015 FOR LOEFFLER SCHOLARSHIP: The team of seniors Dane Ostilly and Russell Oost-Lieevense, along with college freshmen Greg Bachman, Brad Green, Nicky Hoberman, Dave Sharpe, Craig Wolgast (plus Kurt Dasbach) won the annual indoor tournament in the Staples fieldhouse. They went 4-0-0 in round-robin play, won 3-2 in the semifinals, then took the final match 3-1 over Steve Halloran, Nick Kljusev '09, Chris Meinke '05, Igor Pikayzen '05, Nick Renzulli '05 and Kenta Shirafuji '09. Nearly 3 dozen alumni and friends contributed a record amount to the Loeffler Scholarship fund. Andrew Cornish '85 traveled the furthest distance (from Jackson, Wyoming), while Stuart McCarthy '79 was the oldest alum to play.

.

RUSSELL OOST-LIEVENSE TO PLAY SOCCER AT HARTWICK: The tri-captain will be the 1st Wrecker to play at the legendary Oneonta, New York Division I soccer school since Ray Flanigan '69. Congratulations, Russell!

.

ALEX DEEGAN '91 NAMED TO DAVIDSON ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME: The legendary goalkeeper will be inducted on February 16, during halftime of the Furman basketball game. As a freshman for Davidson’s NCAA Division I Final Four squad in 1992, Deegan pulled off some of the greatest saves the team ever saw, all under intense pressure. After helping the Wildcats to a 13-4-3 regular-season record that year, he allowed just 2 goals in Davidson's 3 victories for the conference title. But it was his stellar play in the NCAA Tournament that wowed the crowds. Twice he outdueled the opposing goalkeeper in penalty kicks, including an unbelievable diving stop to end the game against Coastal Carolina at Richardson Stadium. After a shutout victory at North Carolina State, the Wildcats advanced to the national semifinals, which they themselves hosted. Deegan’s 4-year career is just as impressive, with the most recorded saves (277) in the program’s history, 2nd-best goals against average (1.30) and the most shutouts (tied at 20) -- despite missing most of his sophomore season with an injury. He earned All-South Region honors in 1995. Deegan went on to play professionally with D.C. United and the Richmond Kickers. He and his wife are expecting their 1st child momentarily.

.

MARCUS TRACY HELPS WAKE FOREST WIN NATIONAL TITLE: The former Newtown High School star, who played a key role in the Nighthawks' decisive 2004 state tournament semifinal victory over Staples, proved his scholastic heroics were no fluke. After scoring in the 66th minute of the NCAA Division I College Cup final against Ohio State to tie the score, he assisted on the game-winner 12 minutes from time. Tracy, a junior who scored both goals in the Demon Deacons' 2-0 victory over Virginia Tech 2 days earlier, was named the most outstanding offensive player of the College Cup. Soccer America's Paul Kennedy called Tracy's 2 games "one of the best individual performances ever at a Men's College cup."

.

WRECKERS SHINE IN CANDLELIGHT CONCERT: Several soccer players performed in the music department's annual gift to the town: symphonic orchestra members Adam Liu (cello) and Tomer Gat (violin); sophomore band alto saxophonist Wes Langha, and freshman chorus singer George Birch. It was, as always, a great show!

.

RUSSELL OOST-LIEVENSE, MIKE SMITH NAMED TO ALL-HOUR TEAM: Tri-captain Oost-Lievense was described as "tenacious in getting the ball to the offense, then (unleashing) a tremendous shot or (using) dazzling footwork to get ball to teammate." Coach Dan Woog said: "The most telling thing about Russell is he can come up with an amazing move, and the kids on the bench will laugh or gasp and say, 'That's Russell.'" Tri-captain Smith was cited by Woog for being the "anchor in the middle of stout Staples defense, a leader both with his play and voice on the field." The writeup added that he "worked very hard in offseason to prepare for final season in which he was a solid presence for a defense that yielded just 18 goals, posted six shutouts, and played to two 0-0 ties."

.

The Hour's MVP, Wilton goalkeeper Clay Skipper, was quoted as saying: "My best game of the year was against Staples, when I made 12 saves." He called his stop on Oost-Lievense "the highlight of my season, because Russell is such a great player." Added Warrior coach Jim Lewicki: "Staples pounded the heck out of us, and Clay was unconscious back there."

.

ALEX GENDELL ACCEPTED AT DUKE: The '07 co-captain, Block "S" Most Improved Player award winner and All-Eastern Division pick is headed to his 1st choice school. Congratulations, Alex!

.

.

.

Nearly 200 players, parents and friends honored the varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams.

.

Tri-captain Russell Oost-Lievense earned his Block "S" -- the highest award for any Staples athlete -- as Most Valuable Player. The team selected the midfielder/striker, and coach Dan Woog praised his passion and impact on every game. Tri-captain Alex Gendell received the Block "S" for Most Improved, in recognition of his late-season surge, adding finesse to his powerful play. Senior Liam Bohonnon was given the Alumni Award, in honor of his long-time commitment to the values and heritage of the Staples soccer program. The 2008 tri-captains -- all current juniors -- were elected by the '07 team. Woog called them "three great young men, who will be exceptionally strong leaders." Mike Sharpe P'03, '07 was the Jeff Lea Award recipient, citing his many years of contributions to the Staples soccer program.

.

Juniors Jairo Alvarado and Nick Weir were named All-FCIAC Junior Varsity players, while freshman Steven Denowitz received the Stephen Martin Award for his strong play and always positive attitude.

TURKEY BOWL AWARDS ANNOUNCED: Online voting for Turkey Bowl honors gives the Goal of the Day to Chris Mitchell '91. Runnersup for Goal of the Day include Nicky Hoberman '07 and Shane Dasbach '17. Best Goalkeeper was Alex Deegan '91, the former Davidson College, Richmond Kickers and D.C. United netminder who led "the oldest of men" to a 2-0-1 record. Honorable mention goes to Robbie Kramer '05 and Dave Sharpe '07. Chris Mitchell '91 also snagged the Most Impressive Player award, with honorable mention to Ken Murphy '76. His brother Dennis Murphy '72 did not play, but earned one vote just for showing up.

COLIN NANGLE '06 AND MIDDLEBURY: NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! StaplesSoccer.com correspondent Art Cockerham reports: "The Panthers won the NCAA Division III national championship in Orlando, Florida, beating Trinity (Texas), the #1-ranked team in D-III and 23-0 entering the match.  Middlebury keeper Brian Bush made the save of his life at literally 89:59, deflecting a chance at the far post to send the game into overtime. After 2 scoreless overtime periods, the Panthers went to PKs for the second night in a row. With the kicks tied at 3-3, the 5th Trinity kicker rattled one off the crossbar. Then senior Brandan Jackson won it all for Midd, burying his penalty kick. Defense has been the hallmark all season for Middlebury, and they probably just became the first team to win a national championship without scoring a goal in the Final Four -- two 0-0 ties decided by PKs. Colin unfortunately did not even dress for tonight's game, having reinjured his ankle in the semifinal victory, but he looked good celebrating with his mates after the match." Congratulations to Colin -- Staples' 1st national champ since Nick Trebat '94, with Williams College in 1995.

RIDGEFIELD WINS STATE 'LL' CHAMPIONSHIP: The 8th-seeded Tigers defeated #15 Glastonbury 1-0 in Waterbury, to capture their 1st state crown in 23 years. Matt Sedney's great bending shot less than 10 minutes into the 2nd half was the game-winner. Ridgefield rebounded from a 5-1 loss in the FCIAC finals to win 5 straight tourney games, including a 3-1 revenge match over Greenwich. There were several Tiger parallels to last year's Staples team, including a pair of penalty kick victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals; the final regular season record of 18-2-3, and the loss of a many seniors the next year to graduation (Staples lost 17, Ridgefield will graduate 16). Interestingly, Ridgefield coach Phil Bergen was a member of the Tigers' last state championship squad, in 1984, while Glastonbury coach Mark Landers was on the Tomahawks' 1986 state championship team -- which beat Ridgefield in the finals. Congratulations to our FCIAC foes and friends, Ridgefield!

.

ROBBIE KRAMER '05 SETS SHUTOUT RECORD: His 1-0 whitewashing of Utica College gave Robbie the Union College career shutout record -- 14. Congratulations, Robbie!

Elsewhere in 2nd-round LL action, #5 Trumbull fell 2-1 in overtime to #12 Xavier-Middletown; #15 Glastonbury eliminated #2 Farmington 1-0 (overtime), and defending champion #6 Simsbury beat #11 Hall-West Hartford 1-0. In the L division, #7 Joel Barlow beat #15 Fairfield Ludlowe 5-4 on PKs, after a 1-1 draw. Class M #12 St. Joseph moved on to the quarterfinals after downing #6 Northwestern 3-2. COACHES OF AMERICA'S TOP 3 COLLEGE TEAMS HAVE WESTPORT CONNECTIONS: National polls put Wake Forest, the University of Connecticut and Brown in the top 3 spots. Wake head coach Jay Vidovich attended New Canaan High School, and played for the Schaefer's Sporting Goods U-23 team here. UConn head coach Ray Reid was on the fabled Bridge Grille U-23 team, while Brown head coach Mike Noonan '79 and assistant Ken Murphy '76 are former Wreckers.

CAL MINTZ '04 SAVES 2 PKs BUT it was not enough. (Interestingly, if the Cards and Tigers win their 1st LL state tournament games, they will meet each other in the 2nd round.)

.

COLIN NANGLE '06 HELPS MIDDLEBURY WIN NESCAC TITLE: The Panthers avenged their only regular season NESCAC loss of the season, beating Amherst 1-0 at the losers' field in the league final. StaplesSoccer.com contributor Art Cockerham says: "Colin had an excellent game at right back. He did not have an easy task, often going against the Lord Jeffs' 6-4 leading scorer."

.

COLIN NANGLE '06 AND MIDDLBURY BEAT CHRIS MEINKE '05 AND CONNECTICUT COLLEGE IN NESCAC TOURNAMENT: Staples' longtime superfan and friend Art Cockerham reports on 1st-round action involving the 2 former Staples captains: "Conn had the first good chance, rattling one off the post in the first 3 minutes, but after that it was all Middlebury. They won 3-0. After the match Colin commented on how well the Conn midfield played, which had a lot to do with Chris -- he possessed the ball, and did a great job distributing to his teammates. Colin played a very solid match at right back, and Conn didn't have a serious chance from that side all day. Middlebury plays Williams this Saturday, November 3, in 1 of the semifinals at Amherst. Among those in attendance were Dave and Marianne Harrison P'91, who drove over from New Hampshire."

.

.

According to the Middlebury website, Cal "saved the day for the Owls with a great save in the first overtime. The senior goalie got his body in front of a screaming line-drive shot by Baer Fisher. the ball deflected off his should and over the crossbar." Keene State is now 9-4-4 overall. Middlebury, meanwhile -- with Colin Nangle '06 on defense -- finished tied with Amherst for the regular season NESCAC championship. But the Lord Jeffs beat the Panthers earlier, so Middlebury has the #2 seed in the league tournament.

FROM THE ARCHIVES: Westport is believed to be the first town in the United States with a Recreation Department-sponsored youth soccer league (actually 2, for boys in grades 5-9), as opposed to a league sponsored by a church or club. Neil Brickley '71 sent this photo from the Westport News; it shows 5th-6th grade action from the fall of 1966. Games were played at Longshore Club Park; this view is toward the 18th hole of the golf course, so the Inn at Longshore would be on the far left. Today, the former soccer field is the site of parking for Splash, and tennis and paddleball courts. The incline heading toward the (wooden) goal makes today's fields look like Wembley.
