Made a visit to the website to see the 2004 Turkey Bowl photo and read up on recent news. Once again, I missed out on the opportunity to severely disable myself by coming out of "retirement" to play once again. Not to mention I'm 3000 miles away in Washington State. I am truly thankful to visit a site that provides a trip down memory lane. Maybe one of these years I'll get back.

Hey coach Woog, coach Dasbach, former teammates, and newcomers.

I've been up here at school keeping a very close eye on your season. I was promised good things with the talent of freshmen/Ross and the depth of the returnees and so far I have not been disappointed. However, I know the season's goals have not yet been reached. FCIAC playoffs is always a tough place to win. I always wanted to reach the championship game, but failed to do so. This year you guys have the talent to do it. Do not let fairfield avenge their OT loss earlier in the season, just take care of business. Also, in the longrun, I promised myself I'd get to some games if you guys make it far enough, so if for no other reason, just win so I can come home and get rowdy and heckle like I always wanted to at staples soccer games. Best of luck for the rest of the season fellas, keep up the good work.

I came upon your website by accident. It is a credit to Staples soccer to have a site of this quality. As the current coach of Central High School, I am very pleased to see the history of Staples preserved. I fondly remember some of the great battles that we had between Staples and Fairfield High during the mid 90's. I am also very pleased to have played and coached against Jeff Lea and Dan Woog. Staples is very lucky to have these two legends as part of Staples history. To all Staples alumni, my best soccer days were spent thinking and preparing to compete against you. I wish Dan the best of luck in the future. Go beat everyone except Central.

Hello to all. Today, Jan 24, I met with the current

Staples soccer players after their last midterm exam to

announce that I am retiring from coaching. I've been

struggling with this decision since the close of the

season. It is the toughest one I've ever made; I've been

a coach at Staples, either of ice hockey or soccer for 37

years, and it has been the most enriching experience of

my professional life. I told the team today that I will

continue to follow and support this program as long as

I'm around. To any who read this message, whether

former player (or present), parent or friend of Westport

and Staples soccer, know that you hold a place in my

heart! Jeff Lea

Good work Staples. We played hard in the game against newtown. The message is, if we had played hard the whole season, we wouldn't have had to play Newtown second round. But, everyone played really well, and its unfortunate that we lost because everybody showed that they really wanted to win.

It's been years since I last kicked a soccer ball in Westport, CT. My Staples tenure was cut short as I finished high school in suburnban Michigan from '81-'83. Went to play at Syracuse Univeristy from '83-'87. I remember the days of pick-up games on Tuesday nights, Watermelon Cup days, travel teams and State team practice. A great bunch of guys I played with. It is great to see this website preserving the past and future of Westport soccer and Staples HS.

Currently I live in Miami but for the past eight years I have lived in London, Chicago, Minneapolis and the past two years in Miami.

I will visit again soon and I am looking forward to participating on this msg. board.

Planning to visit Westport soon and I will make sure to ctc. players from class of 88' so we can arrange for a little game while i am there.

take all.

Just an addendum on the Watermelon Cup--in 2 or 3 of those years we had teams from outside Westport participating in the league. New Canaan, Weston, and Wilton all had teams in the Watermelon Cup during the early 1970s. Finally, I think it was Dan Woog who came up with the name "Watermelon Cup" when he did write-ups of the games in the Westport News. At the very least, he helped make the name a Westport institution.

In response to Jason--the Watermelon Cup was a town-run summer soccer league in the 1960s and 1970s played during weekday evenings. In much of that time there was typically one team composed of the players who were expected to start (or be the primary subs) on the Staples varsity. The other participating clubs were named for the college attended by each team's captain and consisted of a mix of college players, college grads, and high school junior varsity players. Each team was assigned a color such as blue or white and you showed up with your own shirt--the teams did not wear standardized uniforms. As for the championship trophy, well, there was none, at least none in the traditional sense. The championship team was awarded watermelons; that's why the league competition was dubbed the Watermelon Cup. The bottom line is, it gave the high school varsity players a chance to compete as a unit against older, established college stars and recent college grads. And it gave the younger j.v. and incoming high school players an opportunity to play alongside talented college players. It was a great learning experience and everybody had a blast. If there's any interest, maybe we could start it up again.

I am now proud to live in Westport and have brought my three sons to see several great games at Staples telling them about the great Westport players of the 60's and 70's and the great rivalry between the two schools during this era when a Staples/McMahon final was a foregone conclusion. If my children have the fortune in the years to come to add to the tradition and happen to face McMahon in another final...I will have some dilemma. Great job Dan!!

After 21 years the memories start to fade - thanks for bringing it all back in this format. My experience with Staples Soccer was one of the most rewarding in my life, one which I still reflect on to this day...

What a great site that brings back some truly great memories. I have two sons that played soccer and I always told them the mark to beat was Staples then and now. We had the best coaches that took the time to challenge us all - I think Scott Williamson and I came close to breaking Coach Hendricks nose one day. Thanks for the site!

Thanks to Naddy and the gang who put this together. It looks great! The only thing that seems to be missing is an auction page for Staples soccer memorabilia. Just kidding.
